Storyboards

What is a storyboard?
Used in the pre-production stage of a production, a storyboard is a visual representation of the final media product, such as a scene from a film, TV programme, advert etc

Why are they used?
Overall, the storyboard results in a fluid and efficient production because it is a clear and simple instruction for all of the design elements which will be included in the scene.

Specifically, the images and sketches allow the production team to visualise the scene, so there is a clear idea of what the final outcome will look like for all involved. A storyboard also details the camera shots, movements, timings, and angles, so  during the production stages, it is clear and fluid to understand the construction of the scene. As well as this, the description of location, dialogue, and action, aids the visualisation and understanding of the scene in each shot.

Who uses Storyboards?
Members of the production and post-production team, including:
-Director
-Camera man/film crew
-Editors

Before creating a storyboard for our final production, I created an example, using the opening scene from E4's 'Misfits' so I could learn how to produce an effective storyboard using the relevand language and techmiques. A copy of the storyboard is found here: Practice Storyboard
